The Art of The Deal

The Conflict:

Trump’s proposal to cut federal funding for the arts.

Chance’s Perspective: 

A short video called “A Fire in My Belly” was introduced to the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in 2010. However, it was heavily criticized by Republican senators arguing against its messages about gender identity and sexual orientation. Because public museums are funded by the government, and the Smithsonian was at risk of losing government funding, the museum took the video down. I don’t know about you, but I’m heavily against the idea of censoring beliefs from either political side, regardless of whether or not I disagree with them. Every opinion has a place in our society, as each allows you to strengthen or reevaluate your beliefs system. However, what will inevitability occur in a government funded art system is the use of the arts in order to push a specific agenda deemed “acceptable” by the government, and anything that falls even slightly out of line will be censored.

A private museum is the only right choice for a museum. It’ll never have to censor itself because it will never be in fear of the government pulling the plug. The art within it isn’t to push some specific government agenda, but rather to appeal to the community. Not to mention that those who simply don’t appreciate the arts won’t have to participate.

And that is another issue with government funded arts, that regardless of whether or not you care about them, you have to throw your tax money towards it. America on average gives 13 billion dollars to the arts every year. While that may work out well for those who are actually interested in the arts, what about those who are more interested in nature? How about those who just want nothing to do with the arts in general? This proves to be a terrible system for them. And while there certainly are economic situations where art-loving people can’t afford to pay for private museums, at least there won’t be the same negative repercussions as there are for people who are uninterested with the arts who are currently being forced to pay for facilities in which they do not participate.

There are those who say that if the government doesn’t support the arts, then they will die out. That situation is of course a concern to me as I’m a big supporter of the arts: I’ve played piano and drums all my life, have been a participant in theatre, both as a performer and an audience member, and I enjoy an art museum as much as the next guy. There is no question in my mind that the arts are important. However, when it comes to funding, that should be done by private citizens who also believe in the arts, not by the government.

Chance echoes the sentiments of most conservatives in his ‘big government is bad’ perspective. Conservatives would argue by cutting federal spending to the arts, American taxpayers would have less of a burden on their chest. Let’s say that’s true. If you really want to cut federal spending, then you’re not doing yourself any favors by eliminating federal arts programs. It’s bringing a peanut to a gunfight.

At the same time, the problem isn’t the arts program. It’s government censorship by certain politicians who fear the social revolution that’s occurring in America. Solving the problem comes from protesting censorship, not withdrawing money from the arts.

Furthermore, the above federal agencies are incredibly valuable to our society. They run effective art programs to help veterans recover from brain trauma. They spur tourism. They enable marvels such as “Treasures of Tutankhamen” to be seen by millions of observers. As explained by the Association of Art Museum Directors, “It is the mark of a great democracy to support the arts, which are an expression of what makes us human” (quoted in Bowley). The debate is not whether or not you like art. Frankly, I find art to be boring. However, I understand the importance of these organizations in helping our fellow citizens and preserving the diverse culture of the United States.

The federal spending is also essential to keeping many art museums, both large and small, alive. One such example is the KRUSU-TV station in Oklahoma, where “federal funds from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting make up close to 70 percent of his [director’s] budget” (Bowley). The director Royal Aills told the New York Times, “Without C.P.B. funding, I don’t have a staff. It pays for our staff and programming. They are the glue for us” (Aills). Without federal arts spending, much of rural America would be void of the arts.

All in all, privately-funded art museums will cater to the rich and only display art that the sponsors support. The United States prides itself in its freedoms, and it’s time to move past personal biases and support the arts program, which continues to benefit countless individuals.

   

Common Ground:

Chance and I both see the value in the arts. However, we have different visions of how art can best be displayed. The debate ultimately comes down to the age old partisan divide over whether government is the problem or the solution. While the divide might continue, we will ensure that bipartisan discussion continues along with it.
